چکیده

European starlings have the ability to learn to classify complex grammatical patterns that follow a context-free grammar (CFG) composed of song motifs (Gentner, et al., 2006). Cotton-top tamarins cannot classify CFG patterns, when exposed to patterns composed of human speech (Fitch & Hauser, 2004). Beyond differences in species-specific cognitive ability, methodological differences might account for the difference in findings. Here we show that European starlings can learn context-free patterns composed of human speech syllables. We further show that when humans are exposed to the same patterns composed of starling motifs, knowledge of the elements affects classification. Thus, starlings’ grammatical ability does not depend on any species-specific aspect of the patterns. Conversely, humans may not have an innate endowment for complex grammatical processing without the aid of explicit training on the elements that compose the patterns.

Songbirds use spectral shape, not pitch, for sound pattern recognition.

Humans easily recognize "transposed" musical melodies shifted up or down in log frequency. Surprisingly, songbirds seem to lack this capacity, although they can learn to recognize human melodies and use complex acoustic sequences for communication. Decades of research have led to the widespread belief that songbirds, unlike humans, are strongly biased to use absolute pitch (AP) in melody recogn...

Mechanisms of Temporal Auditory Pattern Recognition in Songbirds

Human speech and birdsong share several important features. Both communication systems entail large, acoustically rich repertoires of temporally patterned vocal signals, and both must be learned early in ontogeny (Kuhl, 2003, 2004; Marler, 1970, 1975). Over the last 20 years, these similarities have helped to establish birdsong as an important model system for understanding the neurobiological ...

Pattern-Induced Covert Category Learning in Songbirds

Language is uniquely human, but its acquisition may involve cognitive capacities shared with other species. During development, language experience alters speech sound (phoneme) categorization. Newborn infants distinguish the phonemes in all languages but by 10 months show adult-like greater sensitivity to native language phonemic contrasts than non-native contrasts. Distributional theories acc...

Differential influence of frequency , timing , and intensity cues in a complex acoustic

15 Songbirds, which, like humans, learn complex vocalizations, provide an excellent model for the 16 study of acoustic pattern recognition. Here we examined the role of three basic acoustic 17 parameters in an ethologically-relevant categorization task. Female zebra finches were first 18 trained to classify songs as belonging to one of two males, and then asked whether they could 19 generalize ...

Finding the Beat: From Socially Coordinated Vocalizations in Songbirds to Rhythmic Entrainment in Humans

Humans and oscine songbirds share the rare capacity for vocal learning. Songbirds have the ability to acquire songs and calls of various rhythms through imitation. In several species, birds can even coordinate the timing of their vocalizations with other individuals in duets that are synchronized with millisecond-accuracy. It is not known, however, if songbirds can perceive rhythms holistically...
